Completing Remote Internship

March 5th, 2021

Completing an internship was a requirement that I had to complete to graduate from Oakland University with a degree in Human Resources. Finding an internship was a bit of a challenge but with the use of social media and networking with a friend I was able to find an internship. Not long into my internship COVID started to make an appearance and places with in person interactions like Universities and K-12 schools started to close. At that point I started to get a little concerned because there was talk about more things closing and a possible stay at home mandate. I was worried about what would happen with my internship if these things really did happen. I was very fortunate and had the opportunity to continue and complete the rest of my internship remotely with CrossFire. Some of my friends that I went to school with were not so lucky and were not given the opportunity that I was to complete their internship remotely. The people I knew that did not get to continue their internships I feel like lost out because they did not get the opportunity to advance their knowledge based on what they were suppose to learn in their internship. Given the pandemic we were facing and companies being forced to go from in person to remote work I can see why continuing with someone’s internship was not one of their main priorities. I did have the opportunity to see how a company dealt with and handled going through a pandemic and I have to say I learned A LOT and am very thankful that I was able to continue and complete my internship. Navigating a remote internship was not as challenging as I thought it would be. The main reason for an easy transition was before I went completely remote I was trained on everything that I would be responsible for completing. Another thing that really helped was being able to do screen shares when I was being trained on something new remotely. I am a visual person so being able to see something be done is how I learn the best. Throughout the completion of my remote internship I noticed good and bad things about working remote. A few good things about a remote internship are the flexibility and being able to work anywhere you have internet, less wear and tear on your vehicle, and saving money on gas and car maintenance. A few bad things that I noticed were sometimes it can take a little longer to get a question answered and you do not get to interact with your coworkers. Given everything that I experienced with my internship everything ended up working out and I was very fortunate and was offered my first job in HR after I completed my internship.
